Nandi Makala grew up holding three worlds simultaneously — the boulevards of Paris, the red earth of Central Africa, the patterned textiles of the Ivory Coast — and this painting is what it looks like when all three speak at once. A great circle dominates the electric blue field, its rings inscribed with flowing script in gold and white, letters that curve and spiral like something between Arabic calligraphy, ancestral notation, and the handwriting of the cosmos itself. At the center, dark metallic threads burst outward like a star being born, or a memory finally named. This is a work about Origins in the deepest sense Makala means the word: not biographical origin, but the kind that precedes biography — the original fire, the first ordering of darkness into form. The bursts of burnt copper and amber scattered across the mandala's body are not decorative; they are embers, remnants of something that burned long before this canvas existed. The gold script does not resolve into legibility because it was never meant to. It was meant to be felt as rhythm, as accumulated testimony, as the sound of inheritance made visible. To stand before this painting is to stand at the threshold of something that knows more than you do and is patient enough to wait. Makala built this surface the way her training at Hermès taught her to build objects meant to outlast their makers — with absolute care for every mark, every layer, every decision about where gold should fall and where blue should be allowed to breathe. It is a painting about memory, yes. But more than that, it is a painting that remembers on your behalf.
