Self portrait looking outward from the face that holds more than one lifetime. Nandi Makala was born between worlds — Paris and the Congo, Ivory Coast and the Southwest of France — and she has spent her artistic life learning how to make that multiplicity visible. Here, in this portrait, she turns that gaze onto a young face and asks: what does a human carry before they know they are carrying it? What stories live already in the skin? The answer is written in every curve of linework that maps this face. Where another artist might leave skin as surface, Makala fills it with the vocabulary of her heritage — flowing organic forms that echo Central African textile pattern, scrollwork reminiscent of European illumination, starbursts that belong to no single tradition but to all of them at once. One eye is framed in magenta petals and a white star, as though the cosmos has opened just there, just behind the left cheek. The other eye is steady, serene, watching us from within all this ornament with the calm of someone who has always known who they are. The cobalt blue that streams down the right side of the face and pools in the garment at the chest feels like water — ancestral rivers, the Atlantic crossing, the thread of continuity that survives every rupture. This is a portrait about what is inherited, what is remembered, and what endures. It is also, quietly, a portrait about the resilience of childhood itself — the way a young face can hold the weight of everything that came before and still look forward.
