There is a moment, in certain West African traditions, when a feather is not merely a feather. It becomes a messenger — something that has traveled between the visible world and the one beyond it, carrying what cannot be spoken in any language but form. Nandi Makala grew up inheriting multiple such traditions, and in this work, she lets one speak through her hands without translating it into explanation. The peacock feather arrives across two overlapping circles — one holding the blue of open sky, one holding the green and gold of earth. The circles suggest celestial bodies, the rounds of an embroidery hoop, the orbits of memory. The feather's quill, wrapped carefully in gold thread with the patience of someone who once stitched the seams of Hermès bags, becomes its own kind of spine — structural, sacred, binding the cosmic to the material. The watercolor beneath bleeds freely, the way memory does: without hard edges, pooling where it will. This is a work about belonging to more than one world at once. About beauty that is also knowledge. About the feather that lands, and what it carries when it does.
