Before she laid down the first stroke of cobalt, Nandi Makala already knew where this work was going — not its ending, but its origin. She was reaching back toward something older than painting: the sacred circle, the celestial map, the mandala that appears in one form or another in every culture that has ever looked up at the night sky and tried to make sense of what it felt like to be alive beneath it. The coral ground at the top of the canvas is sunrise — memory's warmth. The blue below is the infinite — possibility without limit. Between them, a sun disc rises, its gold rays stitched outward one by one, each thread a word in a language older than any alphabet. The script inscribed within the concentric rings is not ornamental. It is a record — symbols drawn from her triangulated heritage, European and Central African and West African, layered the way memory layers: incompletely, beautifully, without apology. And from the base of the mandala, feathers fall — real feathers, grounding all that celestial gold in the physical world, reminding us that every vision of the cosmos begins with a body standing on earth, looking up. The flanking circles and the tiled border feel like the pages of a book that has always existed, only now made visible. This is what Makala means when she speaks of Origins, Memory, and Resilience. Not three separate themes but one continuous motion — the reach upward, the return inward, the persistence of pattern across generations. To stand before this work is to feel that motion in your own chest: the pull of something ancient, the warmth of something survived, the gold of something that does not end.
